National Citizens Service: 60 Seconds with Helen Whitfield

As the first group of NCS young people leave the Positive Futures offices for their residential we chatted with Helen about her current role as our NCS Co-ordinator, to find out about her experience and why she is so passionate that young people aged 15-17 should sign-up for this once in a lifetime experience.

I was lucky enough to join Positive Futures after attending NCS, volunteering then becoming part of the NCS team and am now focussed and passionate about my career path. How different would my life be if I hadn’t applied for NCS? NCS definitely inspired me to believe that, no matter what, you can be whatever you want to be. Grab any opportunity, run with it and believe in yourself!

Why say Yes to NCS ?

I see the NCS as an investment into the next generation, providing equal opportunities and delivering Positive Futures motto “Everyone deserves a chance”. The NCS programme empowers young people to believe in themselves and achieve their dreams. When I look back on the summers I have delivered NCS for Positive Futures I feel overwhelming proud. I would encourage anyone to choose NCS, by the end of the programme with us you will be ready to take on the world!

What is your favourite thing about your job?

There are moments that I will never forget from each of the summers; NCS is not only an experience-of-a-lifetime for young people, but for the staff members too!

People often think I am mad to want to work with teenagers but I thrive on the idea of a challenge, and I am so proud to be part of the team. NCS really can change lives; building the confidence in young people to believe in themselves. My current role allows me to meet a diverse range of people, and share my enthusiasm to help young people and provide a unique experience for them.

How can young people get involved with NCS?

The Positive Futures NCS programme is delivered throughout the year; twice in summer, and once in autumn. We are currently recruiting for places in autumn and for a limited number of places left for summer 17. If you are interested in saying yes to NCS complete your application online here www.ncsingeus.co.uk.  or email Helen here or call 0151 207 6003.

At the beginning of each year there is an opportunity to return to lead and work for us to deliver NCS like Helen did, delivering the NCS experience as either a team leader or assistant. Look out for jobs advertised on our website and if you would like further information about NCS email us here.
