Trick or treat? Positive Futures volunteers plan spooktacular party for young people

Positive Futures marked Halloween with a spooktacular party for young people, which was planned, in the most part, by the group of young people who volunteer with the youth charity.

The group of volunteers, who meet on a weekly basis to plan various fundraising and group activities, wanted to create a fun filled evening for the younger participants to ensure that they had a Halloween to remember!

The staff at Positive Futures and group of volunteers transformed the youth space into a haunted youth club, equipped with Halloween themed games, ghoulish themed food and a spooky disco. A total of 32 young people came along on the evening.

As part of their planning, the Volunteer Group discussed and agreed what they wanted the event to include. They also had to effectively budget for the event and promote it to the young people. The evening started with trick or treat and was followed by various Halloween themed games including duck apple, doughnut on a string, hook a witch and pin the tail on the cat. The attendees even got to wrap a member of the Positive Futures staff up as a mummy!

After the games came a spooky buffet with hot and cold food, ensuring all young people had something to eat. To finish the party, the charity held a creepy crawly mini disco, dancing to all the famous Halloween party songs. Check out the video of the disco here.

Each young person left with a goodie bag with Halloween treats.

In 2018/19, Positive Futures worked with 21 volunteers who supported the fundraising and growth of the charity. Volunteers develop many skills such as communications, time-management, team building, project planning and as well budgeting. They also have the opportunity to support some of the other young people who access the charity. As a result of this supportive and friendly approach that the charity places at the heart of what it does, 94% of young people said that they felt safe whilst at Positive Futures (statistics taken from Positive Futures 18/19 Annual Report).

Clare Corran, CEO of Positive Futures commented;

“Events like this optimize what Positive Futures is all about. Our team of Youth Development Workers support and work with our older young people, who in this case were our volunteers, to offer a fun and engaging activity for some of our younger participants. It’s a win win; our volunteers get to develop their skills and our young people get the chance to meet new people and enjoy different experiences.

“I am incredibly proud of the impact such activities have, and it is a great use of some of our Youth Investment Funding; a fund which is there to provide new opportunities for young people, to support personal development and gain the skills and confidence they need to reach their full potential.”

Every week Positive Futures delivers a range of activities for young people, both within their youth setting on Tetlow Way, Liverpool and out in the community. To view their weekly activities and get involved, click here.
